Square vs Clover
Square provides the cleaner direct baseline. Clover provides more seller and hardware paths, but that flexibility makes the exact processor, device contract, support owner, and exit terms more important.
The decision in plain English.
Square reduces offer variability; Clover expands choice but makes diligence on the specific seller and hardware path mandatory.
Choose Square for a standardized direct relationship and transparent month-to-month starting point. Choose Clover when its device/app ecosystem or seller relationship fits better—and only after confirming hardware ownership, portability, and the full reseller agreement.
A small retailer wanting one direct vendor, a published price, and an easy cancellation path may prefer Square. A merchant already aligned with a strong Clover seller or needing specific devices or App Market tools may prefer Clover after proving device portability, support escalation, and the full subscription total.

Choose Square when…
- New and smaller merchants that value a low-friction start
- Retail, quick-service, mobile, service, and mixed in-person/online operations
- Buyers who want published rates before speaking with sales

Choose Clover when…
- Retail, service, counter-service, and restaurant merchants wanting multiple device shapes
- Buyers who value an app marketplace and broad distribution
- Merchants willing to compare the direct offer with reseller-specific terms
Compare the complete economics.
Square's direct plan and rate structure is standardized and month to month. Clover direct pricing is visible, but the same hardware can be offered by banks and resellers under different processing and contract terms. The seller—not only the device—must appear in the comparison.

No multi-year auto-renewal is stated for the published direct plans.

Purchased hardware is owned by the merchant. Financing is a separate credit obligation and any remaining balance still applies after switching.
Confirm ownership, processor lock, reuse, return, and replacement terms before purchase or subscription.
Processing and subscription pricing can change under the applicable terms; verify current pricing in the Dashboard and order documents.
The Clover name does not standardize every reseller's fees or terms. The signed seller agreement controls.

Square
1. The software tier changes the processing rate
A $0 subscription is not automatically the lowest total cost. Compare the monthly plan premium against the lower in-person rate at your actual volume.
2. Keyed and online volume can dominate the effective rate
The keyed/card-on-file rate remains 3.5% + 15¢ on published tiers, and online rates are higher than card-present rates.
3. KDS and kiosk economics are per device
The screen or mount price is only part of the cost; eligible plan and per-device software charges apply.
4. Financing is not a cancel-anytime subscription
Square plans may be month to month, but hardware financing is a credit sale with a remaining balance.

Clover
1. Clover is a platform, not one standardized offer
A direct Clover checkout and a bank or ISO proposal can have different processing, monthly fees, term, support, and termination language.
2. A hardware subscription is not the same as buying
Non-cancelable 36- or 48-month options can turn a device decision into a long obligation. Compare total paid and exit terms against outright purchase.
3. Confirm hardware portability before paying
Ask whether each device can be reused with a different processor or merchant account and whether reprogramming is possible.
4. App breadth can hide recurring stack cost
The marketplace is a strength, but payroll, loyalty, delivery, inventory, and other required apps may each add separate billing.
How the systems differ after go-live.
A useful demo uses the busiest, messiest workflow: modifiers, refunds, split tenders, offline payments, receiving, closeout, and reporting.
Restaurant depth
Restaurant modes, seating tools, KDS, kiosk, online ordering, and partner reservations are available, but advanced pieces can require Plus, Premium, per-device fees, or third parties.
Counter service, full service, handheld, online ordering, kitchen, and app integrations are available; confirm what is native versus added.
Retail and inventory
Unified catalog, online store, inventory, customer directory, and advanced inventory on paid tiers.
Multiple retail plans, scanners, inventory tools, ecommerce connections, and apps support varied store formats.
Online ordering
Online payment processing uses card-not-present rates; delivery providers can add separate charges.
Confirm the included storefront, delivery connections, processing rate, and any partner subscriptions.
Offline operations
Queued transactions carry merchant risk and must reconnect within the stated device window.
Test the exact device, network, and processor behavior before treating offline support as complete.
Processor choice
The POS and acquiring relationship are integrated; the hardware is not a processor-neutral path.
Clover is widely distributed, but a purchased device may not be portable between processors or merchant accounts.
Implementation and support
Live support availability varies by plan; Premium advertises 24/7 phone support and Pro can include onboarding and account support.
Support quality, installation, training, replacement, and escalation can depend on who sold the account.
Questions that belong in the final offer.
Do not accept “standard” as an answer. Attach the rate schedule, equipment schedule, renewal language, and a worked exit example.
Ask Square
- Which plan and processing rates will appear on the signed order?
- What percentage of sales is card present, keyed, card on file, or online?
- Which per-device apps and third-party services are required?
- Is hardware being purchased outright or financed, and what balance remains after cancellation?
Ask Clover
- Who is the processor and who owns support after installation?
- Is each device purchased, financed, rented, or on a non-cancelable subscription?
- Can the hardware be reused with another processor or merchant account?
- What are the complete processing, software, app, annual, PCI, and termination charges?

- Merchants that want to choose a separate processor
- Businesses that assume every advanced module is included in the software tier
Clover may not fit when
- Buyers who assume every Clover offer has the same rate or contract
- Merchants that do not want to validate hardware and processor portability
- Operators choosing a long hardware subscription without modeling the exit

Square vs Clover FAQ
Is Clover cheaper than Square?
There is no single Clover price. Compare the exact direct or reseller Clover offer against the selected Square tier, including processing, hardware purchase or subscription, apps, annual fees, and termination.
Can Clover hardware be moved to another processor?
Do not assume it can. Ask the seller to state in writing whether each device can be reprogrammed or reused with another processor or merchant account.
Which is easier to cancel?
Square-direct offers a published month-to-month baseline. A Clover proposal needs two separate exit checks: whether its hardware is purchased or tied to a non-cancelable 36- or 48-month subscription, and whether the seller's processing agreement adds another termination obligation.
Now compare the written offers—not the marketing pages.
Derived can use your operation and current statement to identify the missing costs, contract questions, and exact configuration that belongs in the final comparison.
